Rescue Diver

Rescue Diver

In a Nutshell  In a Nutshell
Becoming a Rescue Diver means taking responsibility. When you are on a dive boat and there is an accident, as a rescue diver you will be expected to step up to the plate. That means that what you learn in this class is not only for your own sake, but especially for the benefit of others.

You will learn how to slow down a panicked diver to stop them from injuring or killing themselves or others. You will practice how to bring an unresponsive diver to the surface, from there to safety while giving rescue breaths and then into a position in which you can administer CPR.

So it is pretty serious business. If you are in it just to collect another card you are missing the point and you should stop right here.

What to Expect  What to Expect
This is a fun but strenuous class. A lot of it will actually take place at the surface and some of it even without dive gear. You need to already be an Emergency First Responder trained in CPR when you sign up, and this will expand your skills to in- and under-water rescues. We will spend two days developing ten specific skills and then one day practicing these skills in close-to-life scenarios. All after you complete the theory of course.

How to Prep  How to Prep
Complete your theoretical studies before you come! You can do this online, offline on a tablet or computer or old-school style with a book. Do not wait until you are here. Nobody likes to spend their vacation afternoons cramming when beach and bar are beckoning! It is however a very good idea to briefly review the chapter(s) pertinent to the next day’s dives to refresh your memory and be prepared for our quizzing us before we enter the water. It will save time and make your days shorter and more focused on fun.
Also make sure to review this medical form. If there are any questions you answer with Yes, you will need to take the form to a physician and get their clearance. This is very important! A Yes-answer without a doctor’s signature will disqualify you from participating without being eligible for a refund!
If your eyesight is significantly diminished, let us know in advance! We might be able to supply you with a special mask, but we will have to specially prepare for that.
Wear your bathing suit and bring a towel. Because a big portion of this class is spent at the surface it is a good iea to wear some sunscreen and a hat. But if your sunscreen includes oxybenzone or octinoxate, do not use it before entering the water. It will hurt the reef you want to admire! We have reef-safe sun screen for sale if you need some. Just ask us!
We will bring plenty of water and some small snacks. If you require anything special, please bring it with you.

Where to Go from Here  Where to go from Here
You have now joined the group of divers who are especially called upon when others need help. This means that just as with your CPR skills, you will need to keep your rescue diver skills fresh! If you have dive buddies who are at the same level you can schedule occasional training sessions, or ask for opportunities to practice at your local dive shop. You can also book refresher sessions especially for rescue divers at location dive shops such as ours.

Maybe this Rescue Diver certification makes you into a Master Diver. Otherwise, complete five specialties to become one. And then, perhaps… think about becoming a Divemaster. Call us when you do!
